Overview

I believe that each child should be cared for in an environment that allows them the opportunity to reach their full potential and become a confident learner.

All children at my setting have access a full range of activities to develop and learn through play in a caring, safe and stimulating environment. Support is given to children with special educational needs so they have full access to the curriculum. They are included in all activities alongside their peers. I aim to communication with parents and carers enabling them to play an active role in their child’s education.

I adhere to the requirements of the Equality Act 2010 and the SEND Code of Practice 2014.

My home is located in Woodford Bridge in the London borough of Redbridge. I live in a two bedroom house, it has a secure garden close to local shops, station and two primary schools there is also a local park which we can access by a short walk along the river Roding. I am also in walking distance of two children centres a local library and a number of playgroups.

I work four days a week Tuesday-Friday  from 8.00 to 6.00

You enter my home into a hallway where each child has a coat peg and a basket for spear clothes and any item from home which they might need during the day. In the main room there are two self-selecting units with pictures on the front to help children chose what they would like to do. The garden is well equipped with swings and a covered sand pit for all year round use.

The children who attend mostly come from the local area and from a wide range of cultural backgrounds, I am pleased to be able to meet the communities’ needs and provide good quality care for all who attend.

Early identification of difficulties is important to support children’s progress, learning and development. Any difficulty with children’s learning is discussed with parents and carers.

All assessment is play based and follows the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Curriculum milestones.

Outside agencies may be involved when a child does not progress at the expected rate despite additional support. Parents and carers are asked for their consent. Progress may also be discussed with the LA Childminding Development Officer and the SEN Advisor/Coordinator.

Identifying children's needs

Dedicated contacts

I will be the first point of contact for parents and carers. Progress may also be discussed with the LA SEN Advisor/Coordinator.

Involving children and their families
  • Regular contact between parents/carers and the setting
  • Planning and review meetings
  • Advice on how to support learning at home
Range of support available
  • Partnership working with other professionals
  • EYFS Curriculum  planning differentiation
  • Support for communication needs
  • Additional support strategies
  • Support for health needs

I make use of augmentative communication (e.g. Visual timetable, objects of reference and visual aids) to support children’s speech and language and social communication development.

Measuring children's progress

Planning for children with SEN is done using an Individual Outcomes Plan (IOP). The IOP shows small steps and is reviewed termly with parents and carers.

A Two Year Progress Check is also compiled when the child is two years and covers the child’s progress in the Prime Areas of the EYFS (e.g. Personal, Social and Emotional Development; Communication and Language; Physical Development).

Children are observed regularly to identify progress and next steps.

Support and training for school staff

I have experience of supporting children with SEN and additional health requirements. I work closely with the LA, local schools, Children’s Centres and other childminders. I also have BSL level 1.

Accessibility of the school

I have a small step into my home and out into the garden, the bathroom is upstairs.

All resources are located at children’s level in clear, labelled boxes.

Inclusion

A risk assessment is completed to ensure health and safety is maintained at all times.

There is a wide range of equipment to support children’s learning and development to include sensory toys. Resources are appropriate, challenging and interesting and are available to all children.

All activities are differentiated according to children’s level of development and all outings are available to all children.

Transition arrangements

I will pass all relevant transition records on to the next setting/school (with parents and carers’ permission).

Support and training for parents and carers

We value parent and carers’ expertise and deep knowledge of their own

  • Parent consultation
  • Links with children centres
  • Regular meetings to share children’s progress
