Overview

At Little Rascals all the staff and management demonstrate excellent inclusive practice towards children with SEND and we adapt activities and the environment as much as we can to ensure all children have equal opportunities to participate.

We have a large hall and a small hall, comprising 143 sq metres in total.  We also have a large garden, which was renovated in Easter 2014 with a new safe soft play surface.  We have disabled access (plus a disabled toilet), and both halls and the garden are suitable for wheelchair access, although there is one small step into the garden.  We do not have the facilities for a Sensory Room, however we use our small hall if necessary.

Identifying children's needs

STAGE 1

We make initial observations on all the children when they start.   We then continue to observe and assess.

STAGE 2

The child would be able to participate in “Communication, Listening & Attention workshops.  There are 5 different workshops every week which last 20 minutes (rolling programme daily, changes every day, 20 minutes).

If necessary we complete an “Initial Record of Concern” form and continue to assess the child’s requirements with parental partnership. 

STAGE 3

If necessary we would complete an (IOP) Individual Outcomes Plan with parental partnership.  This is a plan with specific activities and targets planned for the child.

STAGE 4

The child would be able to participate in “Look, Listen, Do” workshops (max 10 minutes) and we would continue to observe and assess with consistent feedback to parents/carers.

STAGE 5

If necessary we would make a referral to SEYP (SEN Early Years Panel).

STAGE 6

If necessary we would offer in-house Speech & Language Assessment & Therapy with parents/carers permission, attendance and consultation.

Further action depends on the individual child.

Measuring children's progress

We observe the children on a daily basis and update their individual files in line.  We give daily feedback to parents/carers of children with SEN on their children’s well being and achievements.  We liaise with relevant professionals as necessary.  In conjunction with the London Borough of Redbridge we regularly track each child’s progress in all 7 areas of learning in line with the Early Years Foundation Stage, four times per year.

Support and training for school staff

Our SENCO is one of our Deputy Group Leaders.  Her name is Sasikala Rajalingam and she has SENCO training and attends all LBR SENCO Forums in order to maintain up-to-date and accurate information.  Our Deputy SENCO is Charlene Sabarouche, who also attends all relevant SEN training.

Accessibility of the school

We are fully accessible for wheelchair users, with access for wheelchairs at the main entrance leading to both halls and it is also possible for wheelchair access to the garden, down one step.

Inclusion

Wherever possible all children with SEND are included in all the activities available on a daily basis, if not activities are adapted as appropriate and a risk assessment carried out as necessary.  Children who need 1:1 or additional support have their key person with them at all times in order to facilitate this.  Parental consultation is carried out as necessary.

Transition arrangements

We support parents/carers through the transition process to school.  We submit our records & observations and IOPs (Individual Outcome Plan) with permission.  If necessary we can liaise with school SENCO/other setting SENCOs to ensure transitions are positive.  Visits can be arranged in both settings too.
