Notification of serious accidents, injuries and deaths

It is a legal requirement that all childcare providers on the Early Years and/or Childcare Registers notify the relevant authorities of any serious accidents, injuries to, and the death of, children in their care and act on any advice given. This includes times when you are away from your childminding premises e.g. on outings.

You will need to contact the Child Protection Assessment Team (CPAT) without delay.

You must also notify Ofsted as soon as is reasonably practicable, but at the latest within 14 days of the incident occurring. A registered childminder who, without reasonable excuse, fails to comply with this requirement, commits an offence. You can contact Ofsted on 0300 123 1231, or visit the Ofsted website to view the factsheet 'Serious accidents, injuries and deaths that registered providers must notify to Ofsted and local child protection agencies'.

Should you have any queries relating to this guidance please contact the Childcare Development Team.
