Gymtherapy

Gymtherapy is a social enterprise which equips children and young people with knowledge in the areas of safeguarding, emotional resilience and mental health through the medium of creative movement. Adopting a preventative approach, sessions aim to educate children to take responsibility for their own physical and emotional wellbeing in a nurturing and supportive environment.

Designed to cater for children who are in need or experiencing low threshold risk, Gymtherapy provides a preventative approach to safeguarding practice which allows children to develop the skills necessary to promote their own safety and wellbeing. Delivered in through dance and movement, Gymtherapy promotes kinetic, hands-on learning, which caters to children who prefer alternatives to traditional classroom based education. In doing so, Gymtherapy comines emotional, psychological and physical wellbeing in all sessions!

Programmes are delivered over ten weeks, covering five key modules:

  • Identity and Self Esteem
  • Mindfulness
  • Anger Expression
  • Protective Behaviours
  • GenderStereotypes

The first 45 minutes of each session is dedicated to movement and choreography based activities which promote an exploration of the above topics. The final half an hour is dedicated to individual reflection through art, and collective group discussion.

Having been delivered to primary schools, local authority affiliated organisations, Gymtherapy has had demonstrable results. Feedback from both social work professionals, teachers and students highlight improvements in self-esteem, safeguarding awareness and the increase of disclosures made as a result of sessions.

Sessions can be delivered for up to ten children at a time, with all equipment (autism friendly) provided. Delivered by HCPC registered social workers, practitioners take a holistic and mindful approach to practice, combining knowledge, theory and skills. Sessions are available either before school, during the evenings, weekends or can be booked for half term holidays.
