Barney Bears Chigwell

Barney Bears is based in semi-detached house in residential area near the Hainault forest. We are very close to a local schools (Coppice, John Bramston and Hainault primary) and Hainault children’s centre, which is very convenient for parents; and also when arranging transitions or networking. We are very fortunate to have a big outdoor area that children can use on a daily basis; and if weather permits free-flow basis. Besides the garden we also have access to local forests, which provides many opportunities for learning and collecting resources throughout the year. We believe in Healthy Eating, therefore our meals are prepared from scratch. Our setting is open 51 weeks a year Monday to Friday 7.30am to 6.30pm except one week over Christmas and Bank holidays. We provide care for children from 3 months to 5 years and we offer different options for childcare such as:

Barney Bears nursery has a clear approach to support all children within the setting. The management team has many years of experience working with children with additional needs at the setting.  We also have an experienced SEN officer.

We are based within a residential area in a two storey house with two rooms for children aged 3 months to five years. Our main room for children 2-5 years has daily access on the same level to the garden. We are open from 7.30am-6.30pm and offer a range of sessions from full days to half days.

Identifying children's needs

We follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum and regularly observe children and plan next steps to support their development. During assessment if we notice a child is not at their expected age and stage we will meet with the parent and discuss appropriate support activities or referral to outside agencies. Once a need is identified, we hold regular meetings with parents and carers who are fully informed of all next steps.

Measuring children's progress

Through daily/weekly observations and assessments using the Local Authority EYFS tracking system we will be able to track the children’s progress and update/discuss with parents and carers during arranged meetings. 

Support and training for school staff

The Management team have completed their SENCO Training along with our Designated SEN officer who completes regular refresher courses. Our Baby room leader has also completed all the training to ensure any children with additional needs are identified at an early age.   We are in the process of booking more members of our staff team on this training. The nursery works closely with the local authority SEN advisor and relevant professionals involved with individual children.

Accessibility of the school

Easy access for our main room children (2-5 years) on one level with access to the garden. 


Staff ensure all children are included in the activities on offer and will adapt or change when necessary. Daily risk assessments are carried out in all areas as well as on all resources ensuring we take into account any additional needs of children. Children with additional needs have their own individual outcomes plans (IOP) which are  shared with parents and carers.

Transition arrangements

Transition reviews take place between rooms. Flexible settling in periods into the new room and a full handover from one keyperson to the new keyperson are also arranged to make transition as smooth as possible. A full transition review is completed when children are leaving for School and meetings with the school teacher and SENCO are arranged when necessary.
