We ensure that the provision for children with SEN/disabilities or AEN is the responsibility of all members of staff within the nursery. We have a nursery SENco who attends regular training and they are made aware of any concerns, alongside the manager. Staff plan for every child as an individual taking in to consideration their needs including those with SEN or AEN, like and dislikes, development and abilities. Parents play such a vital role and we ensure that they are part of the process throughout and endeavour to communicate as much as possible.
The building is a converted house with an upper and lower level. The lower level of the building is divided in to 6 rooms including a sensory room together with 2 bathrooms and a nappy change room that all have step free access. There is a garden area for the 1 1/2 – 5 year olds and a separate area for the 3 months – 1 ½ years with step free access. It also has a lower level that has soft tarmac flooring and sun sail shades. However, our Pre-School department is accessed by a flight of stairs and we are aware access may be difficult in certain circumstances. The stairs have distinct markings on the edges in yellow and black therefore allowing us to see them clearly.
We offer good sized rooms where equipment and furniture can be easily positioned to give easy accessibility and walkways/corridors are clear at all times to follow health and safety regulations and facilitate children’s mobility. If access to furniture is not accessible it is made possible using floor level activities. We provide stimulating multi-sensory for all our children within the rooms as well as in the sensory room. All play areas have carpeted area with soft furnishings and blinds to reduce noise levels and brightness.
- Identifying children's needs
All children are treated as individuals and activities are adapted to the needs of the children, where possible. All staff are aware that they need to make early assessments of children’s developmental needs and to provide intervention when appropriate, this is done through weekly planned and daily spontaneous observations. We use the EYFS to track children’s development alongside staff knowledge and if there are any concerns that a child is behind the expected levels or their progress gives cause for concern then we adopt the ‘graduated response’ to observe, assess, plan, do and review. This cycle of action is revisited in increasing detail and with increasing frequency, to identify the best way of securing good progress. At each stage parents must be involved, contributing their insights to the assessment and planning. All intended outcomes must be shared with the parents and reviewed with them, along with action taken at the nursery, at agreed times.
The way we carry out our learning, development and assessment cycle means we carry out assessments and have consultation meetings with the parents every sixteen weeks. This is in addition to the progress check at age two that we carry out. We can use this opportunity to discuss any children who we believe are experiencing difficulty with their learning and show parents what we have observed through planning and speaking with our colleagues.
Equally so it gives the parent/carers the opportunity to inform us of any routine health screenings or outside agency involvement. We also offer an open door policy so a member of the management team is available at all times should a parent or staff member have any concerns. We may adapt the learning environment, differentiate activities and alter our teaching style to help the individual child meet the framework.
Where, despite the nursery having taken relevant and purposeful action to identify, assess and meet the SEN of the child, the child has not made expected progress, we will speak with the parents and any other outside agencies who may be involved, to discuss whether it is appropriate to request an Education Health Care needs assessment.
The agencies that may be involved are: Local Authority Inclusion/SEN Advisor or SEN Coordinator; SEN Early Years Panel (additional information on the remit of the group can be found on the Redbridge Local Offer website); Educational Psychologist; Speech and Language Therapist; Occupational Therapist; Physiotherapist; CAF Team and others.
We aim to respond appropriately and flexibly to each child’s individual needs and will collect information about the child from the parents and other professionals who may be involved to ensure so that we can care most effectively for the child. Medical needs will be discussed with parents before the child is admitted to the nursery to enable us to put a care plan in place, if necessary, or make adjustments as far as is reasonably practicable, if required. If, despite our best endeavours and after input from parents and professionals in the child’s life, we do not feel we can ensure the child’s safety or meet all the child’s needs, we may have to consider whether our nursery is able to offer a place to the family. We will seek approval for additional funding from the local authority if appropriate and available.
Records are only passed on to another setting/school with parents and carers’ permission.
- Dedicated contacts
The setting’s Manager Karli Delaney is the overall ‘responsible person’ for SEN in the setting. He/she is responsible for ensuring that legislation is met. The Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO) has the responsibility for the day-to-day management of the SEN procedures. His/her name is Ellen Carr. Both have taken relevant training.
The role of the SENCO is:
- To ensure that the staff in the nursery are familiar with the policy and understand their responsibilities to children with SEN and AEN and our company approach to identifying and meeting SEN.
- To offer advice and support as required and to provide relevant training opportunities as required throughout the nursery.
- To ensure parents are closely involved throughout and that their insights inform actions taken by the nursery.
- To liaise with parents and other professionals or agencies in respect of children with SEN and AEN.
- To ensure appropriate record keeping, observation and assessment procedures are in place and are up to date. To ensure appropriate differentiation is in place, IEPs (if applicable) are being implemented and children’s progress and records are reviewed on a regular basis.
- To assist in the completion of any necessary paperwork to support a child’s application for an education, health and care needs assessment and plan (EHC plan).

In our nurseries we have separate toilets and in the majority of them, separate changing areas to ensure privacy, with large corridors for easy access.

We make use of Makaton signing, PECS, Visual timetable, objects of reference and visual aids to support children’s speech and language and social communication development.
- Support and training for school staff
Kids Inc Nurseries are committed to training for all staff. Staff also have opportunities to discuss practice, policies and procedures in monthly staff meetings. Alongside this staff are asked about any concerns or issues they may have in their supervisions that take place every 3 months. Currently we have a nursery SENco in place who has undertaken the relevant Redbridge training and the nursery manager has completed a Level 4 course in relation to SEN.
- Accessibility of the school
The setting is partially accessible to children with SEND.

- Transition arrangements
We ensure that all SEN and AEN support must include planning and preparing for transition, before a child moves into another department within the nursery, into another early years setting or goes to school. This will include a review of the support being provided or the EHC plan. To support the transition, information will be shared with the new setting or school, the information being shared will be agreed with the parents as part of the planning process. Some of our children attend other settings in addition to our nursery. With parental permission, we contact the other settings that their child attends and try to share information to ensure continuity of support. When the child leaves our nursery, their individual profile will be passed on to their parents to give to the school or new setting that their child will be attending. These transfer documents will, when applicable, include previous IOPs and outcomes set for the child. We are always happy to contribute to transition planning meetings with schools and other settings, and explain to parents of children with SEN and AEN that we are happy to facilitate such meetings.
- Support and training for parents and carers
As a nursery, we understand the importance of developing relationships with parents, and seeing them as partners in the education/learning of their child with SEN and AEN. If we feel a child is having difficulties, the SENCO, or another appropriate member of staff, will liaise with the parents sensitively and confidentially.
We encourage parents to be involved in any discussions and decision making in relation to the provision and arrangements for their child’s individual needs. Parents are involved in the setting, reviewing and monitoring of all outcomes set for their child and may be asked to sign these documents. Referral to outside agencies requires parental consent.
We offer an ‘open door’ policy, offering informal chats as necessary and formal discussion by appointment. Information is shared with parents and carers through the use of daily books, feedback sheets, emails, telephone and face to face. All children and parents/carers are greeted by and seen out by a member of the management team.
