Valentines Nursery

At Valentines Nursery, it is our aim to ensure that each child within our care is afforded the very best opportunities we can possibly give them to flourish and grow. Whatever your reason for opting for day care, most parents, whilst wanting their child to learn and progress – above all want their child to feel happy, develop confidence, make friends and enjoy themselves. The children, when they leave us, move on with all of the above but most of all with some of the best memories of their young lives so far. It is a well-known fact that children learn best when they are interested and are having fun with what they are doing. Our aim is to make the best of every single day – to make every day count! We are an Ofsted rated “Outstanding” nursery (March 2017).

Ruby Patel, Manager, (BA Hons, PGCE, EYPS).

Overview

We are committed to supporting all children as much as we possibly can, depending on the child’s needs and whether we are able to meet the requirements of individual needs of children with SEND within the environment that we provide. We operate fully within the guidance of our policies on inclusion and equal opportunities to offer a nurturing and stimulating environment where children are supported to reach their full potential.

We are a 32 place private day nursery catering for babies and children from 0-5 years of age. Whilst we are limited in space, we do have sensory areas and resources within each base room that are suitable in supporting children with SEND. We have a secure key person system in place to ensure that each child receives support and attention to enable them to positively develop within their adult: child ratio as set by the EYFS.

Identifying children's needs

Staff are skilled and experienced in working with a wide range of children and are well placed to tune in to signs and indicators that a child may require additional help. We also have a highly developed system for observation, assessment and planning that will enable staff to be sensitive to the signs that a child may require additional support.  Through regular observation, assessment and open communication with parents, we will work together to support each child and take any necessary steps to seek outside intervention and support as required.  Parents are kept regularly informed about their child’s progress through ongoing and regular communication with their child’s key person, parent consultation meetings and written summative reports. A daily Record book is provided for parents to receive a session by session overview of key day to day information about their child’s time at nursery. Record of Achievement books detail longer term monthly learning journeys which include planning, observations, next steps and parental liaison.

Measuring children's progress

Although much of our assessment is ongoing, targeted ‘progress tracker’ assessments are completed by the child’s key person once a term, which will be fed back to the parents. Meetings with the parents can be organised as necessary depending on the child’s specific needs. IOPs (Individual Outcomes Plan) will be devised to support individual needs as appropriate and meetings will be organised at least once per term to discuss the child’s progress in terms of the targets set on the IOP.

Support and training for school staff

Senco has received training though not in last 12 months, however she attends regular senco meetings and workshops as organised by the local authority in order to receive updates and information on supporting children with SEND. All staff have received communication behaviour training under the Every Child A Talker programme and the setting is currently working on the Redbridge Top Talkers programme.

Accessibility of the school

No wheelchair access. Base room for 0-2 years is upstairs. Facilities for personal care are available but within normal realm of what is offered to all children – ie, changing facility, toilets etc.

Inclusion

Each child is planned for uniquely to meet their individual learning needs, whether they have SEND or not and therefore depending on the need, we will be able to support each child accordingly. Unfortunately we do not have additional adults available as a resource to provide additional support but can provide as much support as we can within our normal adult: child ratios. Risk assessments are completed regularly in various forms throughout the nursery and will be carried out in accordance with specific needs if required. Parents of all children will be expected to be fully involved within their child’s planning, learning and development.

Transition arrangements

We already have very secure and positive links with our local schools and children’s centre such as Christchurch and Newbury Park Primary schools and their adjoining children’s centres. The manager and key person will liaise very closely with the child’s next setting to ensure that transition visits are organised, as well as the sharing of key information/IOP’s to support the child as much as we possibly can. When a child starts with us or moves to a new base room, we will ensure that the key person supports the child through transition visits. The setting has a secure settling-in programme tailored to support all new children when joining the nursery.
