DBS checks for childcare staff

Ofsted are responsible for carrying out all Disclosure and Barring Service or DBS (formerly CRB) checks for childminders and other relevant family members, assistants and friends. For this information please contact Ofsted on 0300 123 1231.

If however you are an employer and need to carry out checks on new or existing childcare staff you may need to use one of the following methods:

• Register with the DBS - if you check over 100 staff per year you will need to register with the DBS. This allows you to carry out checks direct with the DBS service
• Use of an Umbrella body - if you will require less than 100 staff DBS checks per year you can use an umbrella body who will process the DBS checks on your behalf
