- Overview
The whole staff team, including volunteers, provide an environment in which all children including those with special educational needs and/or disability are supposed to reach their full potential.
The pre-school is set in a large hall, which is light and airy with ample of space for a variety of resources and activities made available to all children. We also have a second smaller hall for physical activities and a small room which we use for smaller group activities and for meeting with other professionals. We have a lovely outdoor area, which offers lots of opportunities for children to use their senses explore nature and further promote their well being.
- Identifying children's needs
All children are allocated a key person, who begins to build a professional relationship with the child and their family. The key person works in partnership with the child’s parents to help settling-in, and gathers information about the child’s development so far.
Once settled, the child is observed, assessed and next steps are put in place to support their development. A two year old progress check is also carried out where appropriated and is shared with the parents. If there are any concerns about a child’s development, the key person shares these with the manager, who in turn holds an initial meeting with the parents to discuss these. If appropriate and with parents’ permission, a professional such as Educational Psychologist, Speech and Language or Physiotherapist, are invited to a meeting at the pre-school to discuss ways of supporting the child and to meet their individual needs.
Individual Outcome Plans (IOP) are agreed with the parents and these are used every day. The child’s progress is monitored and recorded and the pre-school supports the child during the transition period, when it’s time to move onto their next setting.

- Measuring children's progress
The child is observed, assessed and next steps are put into place and these are shared with the parents with advice on how to help their child's learning at home. A child's progress report is completed on starting and every three months after, which clearly shows if progress has been made. This is shared with parents once a term during consultations.
- Support and training for school staff
The manager / SENCo attends SENCo forums once a term to learn any new information including ways of supporting children with SEND. During these forums, good practice is shared with other pre-schools and lots of ideas are learned. The manager holds staff meetings and training six times a year and during these times the practitioners are given updates from the termly forums. The SENCo also supports individual practitioners who have key children with SEND.
Training attended in the last 12 months: Supporting Children's behaviour in the early years.
- Accessibility of the school
The Drive Pre-school is on the ground floor, which gives full access to wheelchair users. There is also full access for wheelchair users from the building to the outside area. We have a large nappy changing area to offer personal care to the children and there is a lot of space around the activities for easy access.
- Inclusion
Where necessary, activities are adapted to meet the children's individual needs. Where appropriate the pre-school will offer additional support and ensure that the child's needs are met.
- Transition arrangements
Children with SEND are fully supported to ensure their transition to their next school is as smooth as it can possibly be. The Pre-school arranges a transition meeting to which professionals already working with the child as well as the SENCo and teacher from their next school are invited to attend. During the meeting the child's needs are discussed. Transition visits to their new school are agreed and the pre-school does accompany the parents for these.
