Steps into Work - Supported Internship in partnership with GLL Leisure Centres

Steps Into Work runs a Supported Internship in partnership with the employer GLL Leisure Centres.  As such GLL provide work placements, job buddies and a warm welcome to their team.  The Supported Internship is a one year course for people aged 16-25 with an Education Health and Care Plan who want to get a paid job and need support to do this.

We work with a wide range of learners from E2 to Level 2.  The main criteria is that interns are motivated to work and already have some of the skills to do so.  One day a week is based at Hackney Marshes Centre where interns work towards an OCR Certificate in Employability Skills including interview skills, job searching and applying for a job or a Customer Services qualification.  Interns also work towards English and Maths qualifications.

Three days a week are in work placements at leisure centres across North East London including Hackney Marshes Centre, Mile End Leisure Centre, York Hall and London Aquatics Centre.  Interns do such roles as setting up events, working on reception, working in the crèche, cleaning and administration.  Interns are supported by a tutor and job coach.  They also have a job buddy from GLL.

In the work placement interns learn team working skills, leadership skills, following instructions, being on time, working with customers and lots more.  At the end of the course interns are supported to apply for paid work with 70% achieving this. This may be in the leisure industry, retail, childcare, administration or other in line with the intern’s aspirations.
