Busy Bodies Pre-school

Busy Bodies Pre-School is geared towards the local community, which is diverse in culture and ethnicity. We have been told by the parents/carers that we are a very caring setting that always considers the child’s individual needs. A high proportion of our children are from a multicultural background with different languages and religious beliefs and so with our multicultural staff help the high proportion of children, whose first language is not English, we encourage the use of key words, visits and providing resources to help them with the settling, learning and having fun both at Nursery and home. We actively encourage the children to respect and learn from one and another through sharing experiences and show and tell. The Nursery is based in St Peters Church Halls, in Aldborough Hatch; it is a pack-away setting with 2 halls and spacious garden.

Overview

We currently have children in our setting with additional needs. All the staff have had in-house training and with support from outside agencies, we have become an inclusive Nursery. We have supported children with Autism and Down's Syndrome in the Nursery and provided a smooth transition into school. The manager is the lead SENCO with 3 other staff member who has received training in this area. Staff have knowledge of Intensive Interaction, PECS (Picture Exchange Cards) and Makaton. We do have access to a disabled toilet but this is located in a separate area. Access to the garden will need additional support. The manager has 27 years experience of working with children with special educational needs.

Busy Bodies opened under current ownership in 2003. The pre-school operates from two rooms and spacious garden with St Peters Church halls, in Newbury Park and is within walking distance of local transport, schools and shops. The pre-school serves the local area and from other boroughs. Access to the Nursery is via a level path. The opening hours are Mondays 9.15 to 12.15, Tuesdays to Fridays 9.15 to 3.00 term time only. All snack and meals are provided at no additional cost. Over the years we have supported a number of children with special educational needs and also children with English as an additional language. We currently have 10 staff members including the manager, we welcome students from local colleges and have 4 volunteers.

Busy Bodies Pre-School is geared towards the local community, which is diverse in culture and ethnicity. We have been told by the parents/carers that we are a very caring setting that always considers the child’s individual needs. A high proportion of our children are from a multi-cultural background with different languages and religious beliefs. Our multi-cultural staff work alongside children who have the same language and encourage the use of key words. We actively encourage the children to respect and learn from one another through sharing experiences and show and tell.

Identifying children's needs

When your child enters the Nursery we carry out an assessment on the different areas of their learning. This assessment is then carried again every 3 months. If any concerns arise we will with liaise with the parent/carers to discuss our findings and what would happen next. The nursery has 4 members of staff trained in Makaton and 3 members of staff trained in using PECS (Picture Exchange Cards). Once we have parental consent we will then contact the various outside agencies for advice and complete any additional forms. We will meet with the parents/carers once a term with the additional support and discuss what happens next. The most important thing is sharing information with the right people to provide the right care for your child and provide support for the parents/carers. The nursery has provided additional training for staff including Makaton. We strongly recommend all parents and carers come to visit the nursery to see if it is the right place for you.

Measuring children's progress

When a new child starts at the nursery we implement their learning journey. In this document there are the following things; All about me (completed with parents on their first day), getting to know your key child, observations, meeting with parents, planning next steps and focus activities.

We use the (Red, amber, green rating system) EYFS Child’ progress record to follow your child’s progress this information is stored securely and the information is shared with the local authority with parental consent.

We also provide all parents/carers with a meeting once a term, where we discuss any concerns and plan next steps to use in the Nursery and at home.

Support and training for school staff

The manager attends regular SENCo coordinator workshops provided by the Early Years Childcare Improvement team. The manager has also begun Makaton training. The manager attended Transition for children with SEN training.

Accessibility of the school

The nursery is a single level building with access through the main door, there is wheel chair access available but support will be needed to access the main building, garden and toilet area. There is a changing area available located in the main area of the building. We do not have a hearing loop system in place. A key person system is in place for example when a child needs changing they are supported by this person and also by their buddy (if the key person is away from the Nursery). We will use techniques such as Makaton and PECS (The Picture Exchange System) to ensure that this part of the routine has a smooth transition and promotes the child’s wellbeing and involvement in this task.

Inclusion

Each child’s needs are individually planned by their key person with support from their buddy and where necessary an Individual Outcomes Plan is completed with the involvement of the parents/carers and SENCo. The Nursery is a free flow area and the children are encouraged to access all the different areas, with the support of their key person/buddy. Risk and Hazard Assessments are carried out daily, as we are a pack setting. We have staff who are responsible for the different areas of the Nursery and they check the equipment each morning and throughout the session.

Transition arrangements

When a child is registered at the Nursery we ask if there are any additional needs, so that a suitable member of staff can be allocated to the child. We encourage all parents and carers, with their child to visit the nursery on the day of registration and extra visits are provided to them at no extra cost.

When a child is due to move onto school we ask parents/carers if they are going into a nursery or reception setting, to record this on their child’s admission form and parental consent is taken to start the transition process as early as possible. When details of school places are announced we approach the parents/carers and the transition plan/or Education Health Care plan is activated. The manager will liaise with all the relevant agencies and schools to organise a meeting to ensure measures are put into place.
