The New Leaf project is part of the East London Housing Partnership (ELHP). ELHP successfully bid for grant funding from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government to deliver the NL project which is aims at tackling and preventing homelessness in the private rented sector and we work across the eight east London Boroughs (Newham, Barking & Dagenham, Havering, Redbridge, Waltham Forest, Hackney, Tower Hamlets and City of London).
We aim to reach households at the very early stages, prior to the service of a Section 21 Notice and prior to clients going to their Local Authority for assistance. I do firmly believe that during discussions someone may well express they have had a change of circumstances, such as losing their job or maybe even suffered a relationship breakdown and are having difficulties with their current housing situation and may express they are being threatened with homelessness.
We have been working closely with each of the East London Homelessness Services and have a Named Lead officer we can contact and in addition to this we have developed close links with the Benefits Services and this means we are able to get benefit cases fast tracked, which means that Landlords and Letting Agents get their rental payments faster.
We have a team of experienced officers who can assist tenants by working with them to draw up a personal housing plan to address issues that place them at risk of homelessness. For example, we will mediate between tenants and landlords, negotiate repayment plans, maximize benefit income and will check to ensure that any notices issued are valid. The service is free and there is a very simple referral process.
