All staff are dedicated to promoting a warm welcoming environment for all our families with or without SEND and share positive attitudes towards inclusion. We work closely with the families and outside agencies to provide the best outcome for the child and family.
Mildmay Nursery is a small and welcoming nursery with a maximum of 15 children per session. The nursery is housed in a Adult Learning Centre in its own purpose built nursery unit. We have a secure outside garden and engage in free flow play.
- Identifying children's needs
Each child is assigned a Keyperson. The keyperson’s role is to support the child and family during their time at nursery. Before enrolment we meet with parents to talk about their child and any needs or concerns the family might have. All staff are responsible to carry out observations on all children at all sessions which is fed back to the keypersons at the end of session.

Our named SENCo is Seema Nandha who is a full time member of staff and is available to discuss any concerns.

We have a close relationship with our local Childrens Centre and can signpost families to additional groups to offer extra support to meet the needs of individual families.
- Measuring children's progress
All staff are responsible to carry out observations on all children at all sessions which is fed back to the keypersons at the end of session. Feedback is also given to parent/carers on a day to day basis. All keypersons will complete a progress report termly for their children. These are shared and discussed with the family at parent/carer evenings and the childs next steps are agreed with the family to meet the individual child’s needs. Parent/carers can arrange to have a private meeting with their keyperson at any time.
- Support and training for school staff
Two members of staff have attended SENCo modular training provided by our local Early Years and Childcare Improvement Team and attend termly SENCo meetings to keep our knowledge and practice up to date.
- Accessibility of the school
Mildmay Nursery has access to car parking facilities for dropping and collecting children for families with disabilities and is fully wheelchair accessible. The nursery has a dedicated personal care room available at all times. We have access to a hearing loop system.
Activities are adapted to meet the individual child’s needs by observations, staff meetings and a dedicated budget to SEND.
- Transition arrangements
We will meet with parents, settings and outside agencies to discuss how to support the individual child’s transition to their new environment. This will include activities planned by their key person which could include visits to their new setting with their keyperson to ensure a smooth transition.
