Newbridge Lower School and Newbridge Upper School (Local SEND Offer)

As part of the Children and Families Bill 2014, all schools in Redbridge are required to make available their Local SEND Offer to families which details how they can supportInsert/Edit Link children and young people with a special educational need and/or disability (SEND).

An overview of the school

Newbridge Lower School and Newbridge Upper School are  very successful  special schools under the Astrum Multi Academy Trust , for up to 148 children and young people between the ages of 2 and 19, who have a complex learning difficulty quite often accompanied by additional special needs such as:

  • physical disabilities
  • sensory impairments
  • autistic spectrum disorders
  • associated behaviour
  • medical needs
  • SEMH

The school also provides a range of special educational needs services to pupils and staff in mainstream schools across the London Borough of Redbridge.

At Newbridge School, our vision is to:

  • Regularly consult the children and young people, staff, parents and governors about school life.
  • Develop independence in the children and young people and provide a wide range of opportunities for effective learning and social interaction.
  • Be a secure, stimulating and happy school where pupils and staff can learn together.
  • Promote and develop inclusion throughout the school, with mainstream partners and in the local community.
  • Be a school that other schools will want to learn from and where new ideas are welcomed.
  • Develop the roles of all staff.

The school is set on two sites, which are less than one mile apart:

  • Lower School - Gresham Drive – Early Years Foundation Stage, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2,
  • Upper School - Barley Lane – Key Stage 3 and 14-19

Classes at both schools are arranged according to age and need of the students.  On average, a  class is approximately 6-7 pupils staffed by a teacher and 3 support assistants according to the needs of the pupils within the group.

Our Curriculum

Every pupil has access to all aspects of the curriculum regardless of gender, disability, race and culture. We will help them develop their abilities to the full by;

  • Teaching communication skills that will enable them to understand the world around them and express their needs, feelings and choices.
  • Teaching practical skills to enable them to become as independent as possible.
  • Teaching appropriate behaviour so they can participate in a wide range of situations.
  • Teaching them to develop the use of their senses and physical abilities
  • Providing opportunities and experiences to enable them to participate in the life of the local community and prepare for life after school.

Curriculum Rationale

Newbridge School caters for children and young people (aged 2-19) with profound & multiple and severe learning difficulties and disabilities.

Following both the new SEND Code of Practice: 0-25 years (Sept 14) and Ofsted Framework Sept 15, Newbridge School have developed a curriculum with the following aims;

At Newbridge School, we believe that our curriculum offer should allow opportunities for all students to access a wide variety of topics/learning areas, which develop their independence. Our students learn to play a part in their local community through strong partnership working, adhering to the school vision and core values that we promote.

Curriculum Overview

Learners at Newbridge School learn best from a “non-subject-specific” approach (as set out in the National Curriculum). Although all National Curriculum areas are covered through a topic-based approach and subject-specific learning does take place, where appropriate.

Teaching at Newbridge School is broadly focused into one of the four areas of need, as stated in the SEND Code of Practice: 0-25 years, 2014;

  • Cognition and learning
  • Communication and interaction
  • Social, Emotional and Mental Health
  • Sensory and/or Physical

Every learning opportunity and activity will incorporate at least one of the above, however, much of the time, teaching is holistic and a particular student may experience development of some/all of the above areas within one activity.

In the EYFS, we believe that three areas are particularly crucial for igniting children’s curiosity and enthusiasm for learning, and for building their capacity to learn, form relationships and thrive. These three areas, the prime areas, are:

  • communication and language;
  • physical development; and
  • personal, social and emotional development.

We also support children in four specific areas of learning, through which the three prime areas are strengthened and applied. The specific areas are:

  • literacy;
  • mathematics;
  • understanding the world; and
  • expressive arts and design.

At Newbridge School, EYFS staff teach according to these Areas of Learning in a holistic approach, giving frequent opportunities to encounter and explore each of the three prime areas. The specific areas are also promoted through termly topic work and everyday activities. This is to ensure that we aid children’s development and enable them to reach their full potential. 

Students between the age of 14 and 19 are offered additional curriculum opportunities which help prepare them for adult life. They follow a programme accredited by ASDAN (Award Scheme Development and Accreditation Network) This programme includes a range of community based activities and college links where appropriate.

The school also, where possible, offers a range of extended school activities within and outside of the school day including sports fixtures, social events, educational visits and lunchtime and after school clubs.

Religious Education and Collective Worship

Newbridge School is non-denominational and the content of Religious Education is in accordance with the Redbridge Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education and reflects the different cultural and religious backgrounds of our pupils. Collective Worship is a time for reflection when pupils and staff come together to focus on beliefs, values and events to help encourage a sense of community in school.

Whilst broadly Christian in nature, Collective Worship is sensitive to the beliefs and values of all our pupils.

Parents have the right to withdraw their child from Religious Education and Collective Worship. However, due to the inclusive nature of these activities, we hope that parents and carers do not feel the need to do so.

What different kinds of special teaching methods and resources would be used to meet my child's needs?

A whole range of specialist strategies are available at the school according the individual pupil needs.

Dedicated Contacts at the School

If parents have questions or concerns about their child, the first point of contact is always the class teacher. Parents can make an appointment to meet with the class teacher who is happy to discuss any concerns and answer any questions.

If parents then require additional information or guidance, they can contact the school ( Lower or Upper school) to make an appointment with the Deputy Head of School or Head of School

We work in close partnership with families and parents/carers who are encouraged to keep in close contact with their child’s class teacher through the students school/home books and by phone.  There are a range of staff who are bilingual who are able to support parent’s communication with the school where possible.

We have a Parent support advisor who supports the families of the pupils at the school in a variety of ways.

Parents have the opportunity to meet the teacher at least termly to review progress at open evenings and reviews. Individual pupil targets are shared termly with parents/carers.

We work in close partnership with Health, and social care who provide these services according to individual pupil requirements.

Measuring children's progress

How will the school know how well my child is doing and how will they inform me about this?

Pupil progress is tracked through an online progress tool and through the monitoring of Individual pupil targets. These are shared with parents termly. There are termly reports sent home and an annual report sent home yearly at the end of each summer term.

Individual Progress is reported regularly at Annual review meetings and open evenings.

Support and training for school staff

How are school staff trained and supported to work children who attend the school?

The school has a thorough induction programme for new staff.

There is an extensive on-going programme of training for all staff at the school.

The Trust has its own range of trainers e.g. team teach, Makaton, Assisted Handling, who train staff on a rolling programme.

Accessibility of the school

How is the school accessible to pupils with SEND

As a special school for pupils with complex Needs the schools are set up to be fully accessible in all areas.


We have established Inclusion opportunities, with other local schools and colleges and these are accessed as appropriate. .

At post 14 there are also many opportunities for learning within the local community and access to community activities.

Transitions - starting or changing schools and moving into adult life

How will the school support my child to change classes, transfer to a new school or prepare for adult life?

The school works closely with Early Years and pre-school  professionals for transitions into  the school at  the Early Years stage.

There is a successful transition programme for students changing campus at the end of year 6 and for pupils moving into the school during their school career.

During years 13 and 14 the school coordinator for post 19 works closely with parents/carers and other professionals to help ensure a smooth transition post 19.
