Trying to locate a 'missing' parent

If your child is not in contact with their mother/father and they are hoping to find them then the following advice may help.

Before starting your search make sure your child is aware that you may not be successful and ensure they have realistic expectations. Think of the consequences if the parent refuses to make contact with your child. Try to talk openly with your child about how they are feeling about the situation - this should help you to support them in their search.

If the missing parent's name is on the child's birth certificate then National Missing Persons may be able to assist you and you can contact them on the details given.

If the missing parent's name is not on the child's birth certificate then National Missing Persons will not be able to help further and we would suggest you try some of the following:

  • Try putting the parent's name in an internet search engine such as www.google.co.uk
  • You could contact Directory Enquiries on 118 500 or www.bt.com if you know which area the parent lives in
  • www.192.com has UK Electoral Roll information but there is a small cost for this service
  • Put a message in local newspapers asking for information
  • Ask around family members and friends of the parent to see if they know where they are and maybe to pass a message on
  • Check the Electoral Register in libraries close to known addresses
  • Write letters to any known address where the parent may be staying or be known
  • Check social networking sites such as Facebook, Bebo and My Space - this is especially useful if you know where the parent attended school or details of any of the parents friends.
  • If this is unsuccessful there are some agencies that you can find online and that may be able to help - it is worth a note of caution that some are better than others and you should think carefully before agreeing to pay a fee for any service.

If any parent goes missing suddenly and you are concerned for their safety you should get in contact with the police.
