National Curriculum and Key Stages (GOV.UK)

The National Curriculum, taught to all pupils in state or maintained schools, is made up of blocks of years, known as key stages as shown below:

  • Reception for 4 to 5 year olds - Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)
  • Year 1 for 5 to 6 year olds (infants) - Key Stage 1
  • Year 2 for 6 to 7 year olds - Key Stage 1
  • Year 3 for 7 to 8 year olds (juniors) - Key Stage 2
  • Year 4 for 8 to 9 year olds - Key Stage 2
  • Year 5 for 9 to 10 year olds - Key Stage 2
  • Year 6 for 10 to 11 year olds - Key Stage 2
  • Year 7 for 11 to 12 year olds (secondary) - Key Stage 3
  • Year 8 for 12 to 13 year olds - Key Stage 3
  • Year 9 for 13 to 14 year olds - Key Stage 3
  • Year 10 for 14 to 15 year olds (GCSE choices) - Key Stage 4
  • Year 11 for 15 to 16 year olds (GCSE choices) - Key Stage 4
