What is Early Years Pupil Premium?

The Early Years Pupil Premium is additional Government funding to enhance your 3 and 4 year old’s early education. If your child is eligible for the Pupil Premium your childcare provider could receive up to £300 a year to support your child’s learning and development.

Is my child eligible?

Your child may be eligible for this additional support if you are in receipt of one or more of the following benefits:

  • Income Support
  • Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance
  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
  • Support under part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
  • The guaranteed element of State Pension Credit
  • Child Tax Credit based on an annual gross income of no more than £16,190
  • Working Tax Credit run-on
  • Universal Credit

Or your child has been:

  • Looked after by the Local Authority for at least one day, or is currently in care
  • Has been adopted from care
  • Has left care through special guardianship

How will the funding help my child?

Your child’s nursery, pre-school or childminder will receive an additional £300 for each eligible child to support them with their learning and development. Your nursery, pre-school or childminder will work with you to carefully consider the learning and development needs of your child and use the additional funding to support their development in areas such as:

  • Personal, social and emotional development
  • Communication and Language
  • Physical development
  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the world
  • Expressive arts and design

When Ofsted inspect your nursery, pre-school or childminder they will check to see that the Early Years Pupil Premium additional funding is helping your child to learn and develop and get ready for school.

How do I apply for the Early Years Pupil Premium?

Your child's early years setting will ask you to complete some additional information on the termly Parent Declaration Form. These forms should be completed by the parent/carer of each child accessing a Free Early Education place for 2, 3 and 4 year olds.

You will receive a letter or email from your child's setting confirming whether your child is eligible and the funding will be paid directly to your child’s setting.
